Types of Trays and Racks by Application
- Autoclave Chamber Racks: Internal shelving units (often sliding or multi-tier) built specifically to fit the cylindrical or rectangular interior dimensions of a particular autoclave model.
- Solid & Perforated Instrument Trays: Flat stainless steel trays used to hold surgical packs, diagnostic tools, or dental cassettes. Perforated versions are preferred for steam sterilization to allow instant condensate drainage.
- Pipette & Test Tube Racks: Specialized, high-temperature plastic (polypropylene) or stainless steel wire racks designed to keep delicate glassware and plastic tubes upright so liquids do not spill during a cycle.
Key Material Choices
- 316L Stainless Steel: The absolute standard for heavy-duty hospital and laboratory environments. It provides maximum resistance to corrosion, pitting, and pitting caused by steam and harsh chemical disinfectants.
- Polypropylene (PP): Lightweight, cost-effective plastic alternative used primarily for test tube racks. They are safely autoclavable up to 121°C but will warp if exposed to dry heat or higher flash-sterilization temperatures.
Critical Safety & Performance Features
- Condensate Management: Quality trays feature sloped channels or perforations. This prevents water from pooling at the bottom, which can lead to “wet packs”—a major cause of post-sterilization contamination.
- Ergonomic Grips / Corner Guards: Heavy-duty trays often feature smooth, rolled edges and secure handles to protect lab technicians from heat burns and prevent the tearing of sterile wraps.
